a "can of worms" to open...

Greetings,

I am a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science at IUPUI. I am interested in conducting a study that will explore how copyright effects electronic reserve services in a large multi-disciplinary university setting serving undergraduate, graduate, and doctorial students (most of whom are commuter students). I want to look at the "big picture" of copyright and electronic reserves, but more specifically, the levels of restrictive publisher policies with regards to electronic reserves and how those policies (copyright) restrict how much can be digitized and accessed under "fair use" vs. "required copyright permission." I am having difficulty finding any previous research that address these issues. I, therefore, am posting to this listserv in hopes of some feedback, opinions, experiences, and maybe even some citations of previous work.

If you feel compelled to offer such assistance, please respond.

With electronic reserves becoming a popular service in many university settings, we need to assess how libraries and publishers, with regards to copyright policies and law, can compromise so that the libraries can fully serve their users and stay within a legal/resonable framework. The first step is to examine how copyright effects the service. Depending on the findings, the next step will be to appeal to the publishers.

Thank you for your time and thought.
Kind regards,

Amy Hatfield
