My favorite sampling story involves the song "Tall Cool One" by Robert Plant. The song incorporates several samples taken from various songs by Plant's former band, Led Zeppelin. In the process of producing the recording, however, it was discovered that many of the original Zeppelin recordings sounded dated unless "tweaked" in the sampling process (equalization re-done, noise reduction employed, etc.) -- a laborious and time consuming process.

Not to worry, however. According to an interview with Plant that I read at the time, all of the Zeppelin songs that he wanted to sample had already been sampled and cleaned up by others, mostly hiphop artists. Thus, rather than sample the original Zeppelin recordings, they decided to sample the samples -- the heavy lifting had already been done for them.

Happy trails,
Rod
