That had occurred to me as well, but I think the cases we're thinking of stand for the proposition (codified at section 404(a)) that a _notice_ on a collective work are effective as to the individual works that the collective work comprises; not the _registration_ of the collective work, as is the point at issue here.
I haven't checked any cases, though, so my memory may be inaccurate here.
