In which case, it's still clear that Disney execs weren't waiting for the copyright to expire, because 1987 is 20 years after the film's release.
I was actually hoping that this had been an accurate anecdote -- I would have liked to have used it in the copyright class that I'm teaching this summer. I just verified the dates to be sure, and noted that they didn't add up.
