OK, armed with "Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters" and a pocket calculator, I believe I have two more such anecdotes:

  1. Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" published in 1865; U.S. copyright expired 56 years later at end of 1921. Walt Disney begins producing film "Alice's Wonderland" in 1923, starring a live actress combined with animated figures.
  2. Carlo Collodi's "Pinnochio" published in 1880 and 1883; U.S. copyright expired 56 years later at end of 1939. Disney releases animated feature film "Pinnochio" on February 7, 1940.
