checking copyright status

I rarely work in the music field. My client has sent me a list of songs he wants to include in a children's toy that will play them back. How do I go about quickly checking whether the songs are still under copyright? (I know that the issue of the sound recordings themselves is separate).

Thanks for any help with the rudimentary issue.
