Comparing authors to workers is an interesting idea. Indeed, why not pay authors an hourly rate for their labor. Pop-culture writers could receive a truck drivers salary. Maybe academic writers could be paid more like doctors. Then writing would be just like a regular job and then more people could afford to do it.

Or, if it is equality we are after, we could go the other way. Why not give truck drivers IP rights for each short cut they find? (;
