with all due respect, the below statement is not entirely correct.

recordings made prior to 2/15/72 were not afforded protection under the 1976 us copyright act.

under the statute, all recordings affixed on or after 2/15/72 were afforded copyright protection as of 1/1/78.

what this means is, that in 1973 (for example) a recording made that year was not afforded copyright protection under the statute until the 1976 act was enacted on 1/1/78.
