A license is the legal right to do something that you otherwise would not be permitted to do. The owner of a copyrighted work such as a photograph can authorize someone else to use the photograph --for example, to reproduce it in a website or on a greeting card --by granting a license to the user. If no license has been given, the copyright owner can sue for the unauthorized use of the work.
Most licenses are granted as part of a license agreement. All forms of intellectual property -- trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and patents -- can be the subject of license agreements. rich stim
