Another word for ``license'' is ``permission.'' If someone gives someone else permission to do something that is a license. For example, if a copyright owner grants you permission to make a copy of his work, then you have a license to make the copy.

A license is often granted as part of a transaction that is covered by a bilateral contract and a bilateral contract is an enforceable agreement, but the contractual terms are not part of the license, although the license may be part of the contract.
