I believe that you will find this book very helpful: _The Public Domain: How to Find & Use Copyright-Free Writings, Music, Art & More_ by Attorney Stephen Fishman. If you are in doubt, check with your local library before you decide to buy a copy. (If your local library does not have it, ask for inter-library loan.)
