I occasionally get telephone calls asking for copyright advice. Without fail
I direct them to a copyright lawyer which I am not. Recently I got a call
and I am curious about what the answer might be.
The call in question was a 501(c)(3)university corporation that wants to
digitize their records for a password protected intranet. Their library told
them they would be in copyright violation because some of their records
contain photocopies of newspaper articles. Digitizing corporate records
seems to be a wide spread practice. Is this use infringement? Do you know of
any legal cases?
