The "Beyond the Commons" website is a developing research project dedicated
to the study of enclosure as a social dynamic of relevance to
ethnomusicology, anthropology, and the social sciences, with a particular
emphasis on the analysis of the role of intellectual property and
commodification in social life.
The website includes:
- A Ph.D. dissertation (available online as PDF files): "Beyond the
Commons: The Expansion of the Irish Music Rights Organisation, the
Elimination of Uncertainty, and the Politics of Enclosure" (University of
Limerick 2002). The dissertation draws on critical legal studies, social
interactionism, social psychology, and the work of Michel Foucault to
explore the politics of uncertainty, meaning, power, and expectation.
