Personally, I don't see the connection between attribution and ownership. Ownership is quite distinct from authorship, even in the copyright world. One can be the author of something and yet not own it. So the issue are easily separable.

And I agree that, whether legal or not, attribution is a moral issue. One should NEVER take credit for the work of another. That is both unethical and immoral.
