The GPL isn't the only OSI compliant software licence; and it is intended to be, if not viral, then genetic: GPL code begets more GPL code. Other open source licences such as BSD and Apache are much less restrictive.
A nose round the OSI site at www.opensource.org quickly showed up an Attribution Assurance Licence which may well meet your client's needs.
