Forum Postings & Derivative Works

Most of the major online bulletin board software (vBulletin, phpBB, etc) allow administrators or moderators (or anyone granted the appropriate permissions) to edit posts on the board. Assuming that a particular site running such software hasn't specifically added something to its registration agreement that either assigns the copyright for posts to the site owner/forum administrators or lays out a policy for explicitly allowing admins to edit the post, could someone who runs a forum be liable for copyright infringement for creating an unauthorized derivative work after editing someone's post?
