Hi.

       How do you know that they were in the public domain?
       As I understand it, a compilation of public domain materials is 

copyrighteable if there is some reason for choosing which materials are used. For exampkle, a compilation of public domain cartoons which are compiled based on some criteria could be copyrighted.
