Some resources:

Jeff Herman's Guide to Book Editors, Publisher and Literary Agents (Writer Books) is a great resource. Here's a link:

Writers conferences are also a good place to rub shoulders with literary agents. Find out what they are looking for.

www.shawguides.com is a good source for info on regional conferences.

There's a promising writers' conference in NYC April 28-29 in NYC. It's being held at the Small Press Center (www.smallpress.org) in conjunction with mediabistro.

James Fitzgerald Agency, Jake Elwell (Elwell & Wieser) , Jeff Herman and other lit agents will be attending. Also literary luminaries like Mary Higgins Clark. I believe the cost for two days is $295.00. I do pro bono work for the Small Press Center.

More likely Robin Cook.

Literary agents specialize by genre, since their main asset is their rolodex of editors, so an agent who's be good for medical non-fiction probably wouldn't be good for a mystery. My agent is a whiz for computer books, OK for trade non-fiction, and wouldn't touch any sort of fiction.

I'd suggest working on the day-in-the-life book first, since it's a lot easier to get nonfiction published.
