It was traditional for PhD students to turn over rights to their
works to University Microfilms (which has a new identity, I think).
I'm not quite sure exactly what rights they turned over but I know
there's been some controversy about UM selling copies of the theses
on the web. They used to be on microfilm which meant access was
restricted but not any more.
