Marissa,
Addressing your questions;
1) You maintain your copyrights as soon as you take the picture (or
develop the film), however, you may want to provide notice of your
copyright and register it in front of the Copyright office. See
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#pub. In this case you should
be certain that any agreement you have with your friend CLEARLY states
that your work is NOT work for hire. (A work for hire will allow the
copyright to vest in the employer and not in you, the photographer.)
2) Generally, minors can enter contracts; however, these contacts
can be voidable by the minor's election. (check with a lawyer for your
state law). This is a protective mechanism for the minor (in this case
you). If the contract you enter into protects your rights and clearly
states that you will maintain the copyrights on any work (not a work for
hire) and you choose abide by it, then there should be no problem with
you entering into a contract.
I hope this helps you, and good luck on your budding career.

Hello all,
I am 17 years old and am starting my career as a photographer. A friend of mine asked me if I would take some pictures for him to help promote some bands. Now obviously I can't enter into a contract, so I have two questions.
Please, all opinions and advice are welcome.
Thanks,
Marissa
