Date of copyright

I understood that the date is important in establishing copyright but, increasingly, I find that some books published by major companies are dated into the future.

I have, for example, a student text which appeared in September (when I brought my copy) which states on its title page - "published 2006" and "copyright 2006". Does this work or is the text free of copyright -as it clear exists before it exists!

To add to the confusion my Librarian advises me to reference the text as 2006 on reading lists but this raised some questions from my students.

One book I have with this "error" was published in the UK and one in the USA.   Regards,
