That is a very sensible solution. Doing a search for "royal free" or "public domain" along with the "spider" search term can also help. Also do not forget about the Creative Commons license which is starting to be more popular. A Google image search for "spider+creative+commons" yields only 22 pictures, though... but the CC licenses use abbreviations such as by-nc-sa, nc-sa, by-nc etc, so search for those too.
