I know this is getting a bit far afield (and possibly naive), but I've sometimes wondered: is there some sort of international harmonization of trademark law. If a character was developed outside the US but its copyright under US law has expired (like say Peter Pan) does a US author have to worry about the possible existence of foreign trademarks on that character?
