When classical, renaissance, and romantic poets did this, if I recall my days of English Lit and Latin, we called it "allusion", and it was a common literary device, totally and utterly unencumbered by asterixes, circle-c's, circle-r's, superscripted-tm's or ponderous copyright and credit pages.

Heck, as late as the 1980s Morrissey was pilfering lyrical phrases, and Johnn Marr musical ones, to make the best pop music ever made. I don't think Morrissey gave Sheilagh Delaney the credit she was "owed" for the band's eponymous first album. Received on Wed Sep 20 2006 - 22:30:02 GMT
