The decision in Lotus came down from the Federal District Court for the Central District of California very recently, and has been reported in BNA. Yes, it's a copyright matter, in which Borland's implementation of translating Lotus macros "on the fly" was found to be infringing the Lotus copyright. Don't have much detail, but I believe the Borland program in earlier versions of its Quattro Pro referenced the Lotus file tree arrangement, which the Court found deserving of copyright protection.

I don't recall any patent related issues in the case report, but have only read the BNA summary, not the entire case.

I understand that Borland is going to appeal this case, which has enormous implications for developers seeking software compatibility.
