While I would not wish to discourage discussions on this list of means and methods "involved in scanning, storing, and displaying documents," readers of the list should be aware that numerous studies and projects are already underway with all or some of these goals in mind. For instance:
o TULIP - an effort by Elsevier in conjunction with a number of universities to investigate campus-wide access to digitized scholarly journals.
o RED SAGE - an effort by Springer-Verlag in conjunction with BELLCORE and a number of universities much to the same effect as TULIP. o CARL UnCover - a commercial effort in distribution via fax of centrally-stored scholarly journal article images.
o Numerous initiatives by the Corporation for National Research Initiatives in Reston, VA, regarding storage, discovery, access and dissemination of copyrighted materials, including a white paper on protection of intellectual property in the electronic environment in preparation by the Information Industry Association.
o Other projects that might be learned of through the Clearinghouse for Network Information Discovery & Retrieval (contact George Brett at george.brett[_at_]cnidr.org).
o Others may know of additional projects that I have not mentioned.
