As a first step he might check with the copyright office to see if there was a copyright registered and if so in whose name.

A second tack might be to see if the company had incorporated in its state and, if so, who was the principal involved, or at least the attorney if an attorney was used.

One of these tacks might at least give a name and address that your student could use for a contact.
