Version 1.1.1 (Sep. 21, 1993) of my Copyright FAQ has been posted on usenet.

The Copyright FAQ is a series of six articles that contains frequently asked questions (FAQ) with answers relating to copyright law, particularly that of the United States. It is posted to the misc.legal, misc.legal.computing, misc.int-property, misc.answers, and news.answers newsgroups monthly, on or near the 17th of each month.

The FAQ is available for anonymous FTP from rtfm.mit.edu [18.70.0.224], in directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ, files part1 - part6. If you do not have direct access by FTP, you can obtain a copy via email: send a message to mail-server[_at_]rtfm.mit.edu with the following lines in it:

  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part1
  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part2
  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part3
  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part4
  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part5
  send usenet/news.answers/Copyright-FAQ/part6
  quit

The most current copy of the FAQ, generally identical to the version on

rtfm.mit.edu, is always available for anonymous ftp from charon.amdahl.com
[129.212.33.1], in the directory /pub/misc.legal/Copyright-FAQ, filenames
part.1 - part.6.

Updates in this release:

As always, feedback is welcome.

Note: in moving the file from my home word processor to the system at my office, changes in the default margins introduced some poor formatting in parts 1 (in the portion describing the changes for V1.1.1) and 2 (the bulletitem  list added to section 2.4). This has been noted and will be corrected in the next release. The corrections have already been applied to the version at charon.amdahl.com.

Second note: moments ago, I received an email from an authoritative source that section 2.4 of the FAQ has significant errors. The writer was rushed, but promised to send a more detailed critique very soon. I am not certain whether he is looking at V1.1.0, which definitely had errors, and which I had, I thought, corrected in V1.1.1, or whether he is looking at V1.1.1 and has identified errors of which I was not aware. Just thought I'd pass this caveat on. Perhaps my list of updates should have instead read "Major overhaul to section 2.4 (on copyright duration), including *introduction* of some significant errors." :-(
