The issue in the Fogerty case boiled down to whether or not Fogerty could use his own voice. The holder of the copyright on the CCR songs (Fantasy Records in Berkeley) was trying to prevent him from doing so because his
"sound", meaning his voice, on his solo recordings was similar to his
"sound" on the CCR recordings.

If my memory is correct, the judge ruled against Fantasy Records. At the time all of this was going on I recall someone saying that it was similar to the Bette Midler sound alike case. But how can it be similar? Ford hired someone who sounded like Midler after Midler turned down Ford's offer to sing "Do You Want to Dance?" for their advertising campaign and Fogerty was not imitating anyone.
