Can't answer your question, but I SUSPECT it has something to do with prolonging "shelf-life". Or, could it be extending "copyright life"? The practice annoys me - even without knowing why it is done. It seems to be similar to deceptive advertising, if not that, surely deceptive something. I eagerly await a response - benign, I hope.
