There's a discussion that's been going on for some time now on the 
Usenet news group misc.legal about copyright in Usenet news postings.  
The thread has been captioned "Copyright Law and Foolishness" and, 

more recently, "Protection of Usenet Articles." If the student has a newsreader that will show him all of the messages in a particular thread, he can pick up the discussion by looking at articles posted by Terry Carroll or Bruce Hayden within the past week.
