fair use book copying

Thanks to Maryly Snow and Ruth Dukelow for book references. We'll get these and see what sections 107 an 108 have to say. In the mean time, is there a short answer to how a "portion" is defined? The staff of the National Museum of Natural History were instructed that if they indicated one chapter of a book NOT to be copyed, then the rest of the book could be copied, and it has apparently been adding up to a tremendous amount of copying. I have challenged them on this, and tried to enlist aid of our legal counsel, but to my knowledge no policy change has been announced or initiated. Extraordinary.
