I think a better analysis of the situation is to go back to the law-equity dichotomy and ask whether the software vendor has an adequate remedy at law, i.e. damages, i.e. money. If so, and it would certainly seem so in the case of an unpaid license fee, then the vendor should not be able to resort to self-help (however automated) by disabling the ability to use the software.
