along the same lines as 'timers' embedded in the software, what about time dependant elements embedded in external datastreams upon which software and systems depend?

For example, stock data is often available for subscription by FM broadcast. Access passwords change regularly, and updates to software are necessary to maintain operation of the applications. This can be distinguished, but as such a facility becomes more deeply embedded in an application... what will the result be?

As distributed (network based) applications become more common, software and service may become a fuzzy line. In the service world, denial of further access to functionality is completely acceptable. Especially where software is licensed, is execution of the program a right of ownership or remote access to a licensed service?

[Just a few more thoughts]
