National Conference to Address Educational Multimedia
Development and Copyright
In response to the growing concerns about copyright on the part of faculty and students developing their own multimedia programs for educational uses, the Consortium of College and University Media Centers (CCUMC) and the Agency for Instructional Technology (AIT) are planning a national conference on June 15-17, 1994, at American University in Washington, D.C. The EDUCATIONAL FAIR ACCESS AND THE NEW MEDIA NATIONAL CONFERENCE will, for the first time, bring together major interest groups and a host of copyright experts to address these concerns. Approximately 90 national associations, representing educational, governmental, and commercial interests have been invited to participate, along with observers from leading professional publications. Among those making formal presentations will be Barbara Ringer, Acting Register of Copyrights, United States Copyright Office; Robert Heterick, President, EDUCOM; Professor Fred T. Hofstetter, Director of the Instructional Technology Center, University of Delaware; Robert Wedgeworth, University Librarian, University of Illinois/Champaign-Urbana; Michael Ribaudo, City University of New York; and Bernard E. Sorkin, Senior Counsel, Time-Warner, Inc. representing the Motion Picture Association of America.
Participants will hear several formal presentations, in addition to those named above, and will work in small groups to begin the process of developing fair use guidelines for the use of copyrighted works in multimedia programs produced by faculty and students for educational purposes. Several demonstrations of the new technology will be conducted during the course of a reception scheduled to be held the first evening of the conference. Complete Conference Proceedings will be published by AIT.
AIT is a nonprofit US-Canadian corporation established in 1962. Its mission is to foster learning by developing, acquiring, and distributing quality electronic technology-based resources and services; and by providing leadership to the educational community.
CCUMC is a 300-member professional education association representing 184 institutions and more than 30 educational media and computer software producers and distributors. The association is committed to developing standards for the effective implementation and management of instructional media in higher education.
