In Canada, copyright is registrable (see ss 48-57 of the Copyright Act). However, registration is not required. It's only real value is that it provides a short-cut in infringement actions. Extracts from the register are admissible as (rebuttable) proof of their contents, and a certificate of registration is evidence that copyright subsists in the work. The expense and difficulty that plaintiffs may face in attempting to establish that they own the copyright is greatly reduced.
