Most trade books are only *licensed* to publishers, and the copyright is in the name of the author. 30-40 years ago, publishers would copyright works in their names, and then re-assign the copyright to the author if the work went out of print and, provided the contract permitted, rights were reverted. Magazines are probably the most common example of published works where the publisher owns the copyright.
