copyright question on out of print articles

Hello,

I've got a question for you that you may be able to answer or else point me in the right direction. Recently I stumbled upon writings by my grandfather in Palestine, under a pen name, and published for an out of print newspaper called the Palestine Illustrated News. The articles were published from 1940 until his death in 1946. I am interested in possibly publishing these articles but don't know if the copyright has expired and/or how I am able to copyright something I didn't publish myself.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
