Hello, everyone,

I am new on this list, and have enjoyed reading the various debates. My immediate need is probably something that was discussed long ago, so I apologize if this repetitive to many of you.

I am a librarian in a small private college. Our professors make extensive use of the academic reserve desk, putting meida of all kinds on reserve for the students. I'm not in the Circulation Dept., but as the librarian who handles AV, copyright questions are often directed my way.

  1. If we own a given periodical, and a professor wants one article from a given issue place on reserve, may we photocopy this article and place it on reserve? The professor is quite concerned that the article will be torn out of the periodical if a copy is not put on reserve.
  2. A professor wants photocopies of several chapters of a book (which is not in our collection) put on reserve. The professor does not have a personal copy of the book to put on reserve. Is it permissible to put all requested chapters on reserve at the same time?

Please reply to me directly in order to spare the list recipients from reading "old issues." Thank you for your help.
