You might want to suggest "The Uneasy Case for Copyright: A Study of Copyright in Books, Photocopies, and Computer Programs" by (now Justice) Stephen Breyer in the December 1970 issue of the Harvard Law Review (Vol. 84, No.2, pp. 281-351). Another possibility would be Benjamin Kaplan's An Unhurried View of Copyright (New York and London: Columbia University Press, 1967).

If your student is interested in international aspects of copyright, he or she might wish to consider reading Copyright: Intellectual Property in the Information Age by Edward W. Ploman and L. Clark Hamilton (London, Boston, and Henley: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1980). Among other things, this book compares the copyright systems of 10 "representative" countries.
