Baron's reply to Peter Graham's posting illustrates very nicely 1) assumptions made by journal publishers e.g. "submission will be taken to imply . . ." and 2) the taking hostage, yet again, by commercial i.e for profit journal publishers of the rights of journal article authors.
VR may indeed be a "prestigious" journal with an international audience. VR and G&B could still make a profit and grant to authors shared copyrights.
It is worth noting that some prominent and unsubsidzed journals, e.g. College and Research Libraries (which I edited 1980-84) have granted to authors shared copyright for decades.
