Several people have asked for citations to statutes that might be used to protect sysops from spammers and hackers. Here are a few off the top of my head:

Washington State

   W.S.A. 943.70(2)(a)2, (2)(b)3.
New Mexico

Computer Crimes Act. NMSA 1978, ss 30-45-1 to 30-45-7. Florida

   s 815.02, Fla.Stat.
New York

   McKinney's Penal Law s 156.20 (1992). Tennessee

   T.C.A. s 39-3-1402(1, 2).

These statutes generally outlaw unauthorized access to systems, or the insertion of unauthorized data.

There are several more out there, I just don't have the notes in front of me. The Wired article will come out (I think) in February.
