Section 1002(d)(1) prohibits encoding of inaccurate information regarding the copyright and generation status of the source material for the recording. (These two bits constitute the "'do not copy me' flag".) A copyright holder that encoded a prerecorded original as a copy would be encoding inaccurate generation status information.
