"Flaming" is an annoying, ad hominum or outright nasty attack with a person or group as the subject matter, usually posted for the world to see.
"Spamming" is the widespread and indiscriminate posting of the same message, usually an advertisement (but often an incoherent political treatise) to newsgroups across USENET, with no relation to the board's purpose. This is usually accomplished by a program called a "spam-bot" which repeats the mailing thousands of times.
FYI: Under Connceticut's new computer law, flaming may be illegal, if the law is given a liberal construction.
