Those shrinkwrapped envelope "agreements" has been thrown out of (at least one) court on the grounds that buyers can't be held to agreements that weren't in force at the time the sale was made.
I think its safe to ignore them. That's different from ignoring copyright law, which was in force before the sale was made.
I think those envelopes persist because of their ability to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt and thus limit rights granted under copyright law.
