Dear CNI Subscriber,

The 1996 NFAIS (National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services) Annual Conference is right around the corner and there are still a FEW seats available! Here are two sessions that you just won't want to miss...

COPYRIGHT! COPYRIGHT! COPYRIGHT!    Monday, February 26th -- Afternoon Session 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. "Content: Who Owns It?"

In the emerging information economy, intellectual property is increasingly regarded as an asset of high value, and content owners are becoming more and more aggressive in asserting their rights to control the use and reuse of information. The resolution of these central issues will be a determining factor in how the future shapes up for authors, publishers, users, and other stakeholders. In this "no holds barred" session, we'll hear the entire range of current views.

**Moderator: Bonnie Lawlor, General Manager, Library Division, UMI
**Point/Counterpoint: "Are Journal Articles and Abstracts Even
  Copyrightable?"
**Joseph Bremner, Attorney at Law vs. Jon Baumgarten, Attorney at Law

4:00 - 5:30 p.m. "Content: Who Owns It?" (continued) A panel of experts will address publishers' rights, authors' rights, and users' rights...

**Dr. Pieter S.H. Bolman, President, Academic Press: "Publishers'
  Rights"
**Dan Carlinsky, Chair, Contracts Committee, American Society of
  Journalists and Authors: "Authors' Rights"
**Barbara Quint, President, Quint and Associates: "Users' Rights"

PRIMARY/SECONDARY PUBLISHERS ISSUES     Tuesday, February 27th -- Afternoon Session 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. "Primary & Secondary Publishers Issues" (American Medical Publishers' Association and Association of American Publishers invited) This session follows up on last year's provocative Primary-Secondary Publishers' Roundtable, with an update on developments and issues that affect both primaries and secondaries.

**Moderator: Dennis Auld, Senior Director, PsycINFO and NFAIS President
**Dick Kaser, Executive Director, NFAIS: "The Convergence of Primary and
  Secondary Publishing"
**Douglas Bennett, V. P., American Council of Learned Societies: "Fair
  Use in Digital Environments"
