For more than two decades the mattress labels have explicitly stated that they are not to be removed except by the consumer - so this old joke is based on very old mattresses - and does not reflect the current law.
More apt, perhaps, is the FBI WILL GET YOU warning on rented video tapes of a decade ago. I think this has been replaced with a more tame and proper copyright notice that says copying is not legal.
