One of the unfortunate characteristics of a gopher type URL such as the one Terry cited, is that it relies on raw byte values to point to the location of an individual e-mail note or news posting within a larger single file.
In other words, the file "log9603" contains two to three hundred individual pieces of email lumped into one physical file, and the way the gopher protocol builds a URL for an individual note within the file is by looking at the starting byte and ending byte of the particular note being referenced (the string "0R434440-439194" above). Naturally, if anything changes the beginning or ending byte value of the note (e.g. its location), the URL becomes invalid...
In the process of loading the CNI-COPYRIGHT archives for the month of March into the BRS/Search system here, I noticed an couple of errors in the file and repaired it. This editing results in the unfortunate side-effect that the URL Terry cited is no longer valid.
