Copyright and Libraries: A Leadership Workshop Sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries

April 26 - 27, 1996
Radisson Barcelo Hotel
Washington, DC

Purpose and Overview:

     This two-day Copyright Workshop for directors and librarians in research and academic libraries will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 26 - 27, 1996. The goals of the workshop are to:

  1. provide a foundation for understanding the U.S. copyright law, related guidelines, and significant court cases;
  2. update librarians about copyright in the print and electronic environment, with an emphasis on the impact of the NII on copyright; and,
  3. contribute to educational efforts to increase copyright awareness within the North American higher education and research communities.

     Day One will provide the conceptual framework of the U.S. copyright law by reviewing in detail the law, related guidelines, key legal cases, and anticipated legislative changes.

     Day Two moves participants from the conceptual framework provided by the copyright law to a series of focused discussions on the impact of copyright and licensing on the following library functions or collections: electronic reserves, interlibrary loan, preservation, database/electronic resources licensing, distance education, multimedia, and special collections/archives/visual images. The workshop will feature the development of a copyright education  initiative at one research university. Participants will also have the opportunity to formulate the elements of a copyright program to implement in their own institution.

Target Audience:

     The workshop is designed for library directors, associate directors, and departments heads interested in increasing their knowledge of copyright in the educational setting. Individuals might include those who:
