The process of painting on a leaf may be patentable if it is novel, useful and nonobvious to a person having ordinary skill in the art of painting. But you could have copyright problems in transferring existing images to leaves, because preparing copies and derivative works are among the various rights granted by copyright law. Better get advice of some experienced patent counsel before proceeding too far. A list of all registered patent attorneys and agents is available at the Patent and Trademark Office's Web site http://www.uspto.gov/. For a really good Web site on IP (or "intellectual property") matters, see the law firm of Oppedahl & Larson at http://www.patents.com/. And good luck!
